About Tailings – Global Tailings Review

The centreline method is a hybrid of upstream and downstream designs. In Centreline construction, the dam is raised vertically from the starter dam. The dam crest therefore remains fixed relative to upstream and downstream directions as the dam is sequentially raised. This design method can also incorporate internal drainage to improve stability.

The dangers of tailing dams on the planet

 · Most mines opt for the cheaper 'upstream method' where the tailings themselves are piled up, with more tailings added to increase the height of the dam as mining operations continue. Dams built using the upstream method are more likely to collapse because, once dried, the tailings used to create the barrier become less dense and more sandlike, increasing the likelihood that it will erode ...

A guide to tailings dam monitoring

 · Mining organisations are hastening to implement more efficient methods of tailings dam monitoring, seeking to achieve greater visibility of conditions across their sites. This will become increasingly pressing with governments and regulators intensifying their scrutiny of the current standards.

Mine Tailings Mine Tailings

Mine Tailings

 · Mine tailings' size and composition depends on the mining method. For hardrock metal mines, tailings are usually a very fine mud or powder, which is left over after ore is crushed and valuable minerals are extracted from it. Tailings may also contain chemicals used for mineral extraction.

 · However, this method of disposal is no longer common practice, mainly because of environmental concerns. Pre1960s. Up until the 1960s, tailings dam designs either used the upstream dam construction method or conventional water storage dam designs to contain the tailings. An early photo of upstream dam construction is shown in Figure 1.

What are the main methods of mining? | American ...

There are four main mining methods: underground, open surface (pit), placer, and insitu mining. Underground mines are more expensive and are often used to reach deeper deposits. Surface mines are typically used for more shallow and less valuable deposits. Placer mining is used to sift out valuable metals from sediments in river channels, beach sands, or other environments.

Tailings dams are built gradually over time, as the mine produces more waste and hydro dams are constructed all at once. This means that safety oversight can change significantly if the mine changes operators, if the type of ore changes as the mine reaches deeper deposits, or if the mining company comes under economic pressure.

 · Surface mining is conducted by two basic methods: contour strip mining and area mining. Contour strip mines are used in hilly or rolling country, such as occurs in the Appalachian coal mining region. Overburden excavations follow the contour of the coal outcrop along the hillside, resulting in long sinuous bands of stripmined land surrounding the hill.
